Abstract

Local festivities are a clear representation of the cultural tradition of a territory, which some researchers of tourism activity have incorporated, since many years ago already, within the catalogue of resources which serves as a base for the competitiveness of tourist spaces. The actual boom of cultural tourism confirms, more so, that these researchers are right. However, it is also true that at the time of detailing the economic aspects generated by culture, researchers have been much more fascinated by the effects of macrofestivals or macroevents (such as Olympics or cultural festivals) than by popular festivities, whose periodical character and more modest consideration provokes that they pass unnoticed.      This article examines the economic impact which the popular festivities of «Moors and Christians» generates within Calpe, a mature tourism destination of the province of Alicante. It is manifested that these popular festivities are an advanced factor for competitive tourism, contributing toward the generation, in merely two days time, between 11 and 18% of the annual net earnings of the municipality from tourism.
