Abstract

This paper presents a typology of the primary tourist centres of Central America. These were defined as places that have outstanding natural or cultural features as well as good accessibility and infrastructure, enjoy adequate tourist promotion, benefit from a favorable imaginary and, in some cases, are incorporated in the World Heritage Sites list. A total of 93 places were identified and classified in four major types. An important research finding indicates the predominance of sites whose natural resources are the platform upon which tourism has been expanding in the region.
