Abstract

The Duero River represents the natural axis that articulate the territory of the Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León. It flows from the headwaters in the east of the region to the Portuguese-Spanish border in the west of the region, and it has conditioned, historically, the relationships between both communities. In addition, the lands within this political region belong most of them to the Duero fluvial basin, except for a few small areas in the borders, whose rivers belong to the North, Ebro and Tajo basins. The directives of the European institutions for the beginnings of the 21st century, establish a shared management of the natural and cultural resources for the «euroregion» Duero/Douro. In this new framework of cooperation, the projects aimed at a sustainable and quality tourism play an essential role. The proposal of an integral tourist use of the castellan stretch became a fact with the design of the «Ruta del Duero». This was planned with an important territorial base linked to the agricultural regions next to the river, and has been supported by different initiatives with a considerable economic effort.
