Abstract

In this paper we study the social protest that took place in the Andalusian village of Palomares after the air accident on January 17, 1966, which made four thermonuclear bombs fall to the ground. In the context of the Cold War and Francoist censorship, we focus on the actions taken by Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo, which led her to the Court of Public Order, to prison and exile. Under these circumstances the myth of the «Red Duchess» was created.
