Abstract

In this article we study the traditional culture of water in Totana (Murcia), and the social, economic and symbolic manifestations generated. We deal with the origin of the waters of Totana: the Balsa Vieja community, the pipe of Los Frailes, La Carrasca aqueduct, the watercourse of Los Molinos, the turbid waters of Guadalentín river, etc. Besides, we discuss the economic system and the social and cultural expressions created by the water shortage and the access to it: the sale of water in «Alporchón» and devotional expressions, processions of prayers and blessing of the fields.
