Abstract

The article examines the culture of cemeteries in Europe from a theoretical and historical perspective. In the first part we analyze the transit of the cemetery within the city to the modern cemetery as a measure of hygiene but also of biopolitical control of the human body by the civil power. In the second part we discuss how these changes have been affecting the structure and design of cemeteries as a cultural landscape as well as their impact on pattern of burials. The last chapter deals with the importance of the cemetery as a cultural heritage.
