Abstract

The relationship of society with death in the villages of the region of Murcia and, inCaravaca de la Cruz specifically, hardly changed in its external manifestations from 18th century tothe early twentieth century. Customs related to death a real funeral ritual which started at the momentof death and lasted until the end of mourning, much later. This ritual, which sometimes was initiatedby the deceased in advance, preparing himself socially and spiritually, with the celebration of the willand the preparation of the shroud. This has been present during generations, conditioning the life formsand filling a large part of earthly existence, dominated by fears about the uncertainty of the unknown.
