Abstract

The forms of religious devotion in the towns in the area have similar features. They have been influenced by a convergent process, which started in the chapels (of private or semi-public worship) and continued in parishes which were fully established institutions approved by the ecclesiastical authorities. A chapel entails more intimate, popular and close worship and devotion. On the other hand, parishes meet the needs of larger populations and imply a bigger distancing, a larger religious structure and a loss of the intimate and private character of the chapel. In this paper we try to unravel the whole process and how it still continues shrouded in mystery and in new ways to reach citizens.
