Abstract

This article strives to release the recent discovery of three medieval aceñas and a tablacho located at the Senda de Granada archaeological site (Murcia). These hydraulic structures are associated with the Churra La Vieja and Alfatego irrigation ditches, whose channels divert water from Aljufía’s Great Ditch, which originates in turn in the Contraparada’s Great Azud. These are the fi rst aceñas of an Islamic irrigation ditch known in this oriental part of the Andalussian territory. The chronology provided by the two documented types of arcaduz (X and XI centuries) allows us to date not only the aforementioned structures, but also the construction of the ditches to which Churra La Nueva is mainly related. In this paper we also make a functional reconstruction proposal for this kind of aceñas, which were furnished with the water fl owing along the channels by virtue of the law of communicating vessels.
