Abstract

It has been observed that there are systems to collect, carry and distribute water from aquifers near the surface in arid and semi-arid environment of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. These consist of horizontal wells (draining galleries), which are called «galleries with embrasures» in Murcia and «qanat-s», «fogarra-s» and «viaje-s de agua» («water trips») elsewhere. After fi nding and analysing these systems, we shall relate the ecotopological conditions of the area with its exploitation, thus emphasising the importance of these systems as water sources. In the South-east of the Iberian Peninsula, framed by the isoyeta of 400 millimeters the galleries with embrasures are a part of the systems to collect, carry and distribute water. That make it possible to face the potential evapotranspiration and the shortage of own resources of water.
