Abstract

This paper describes the development of water extraction technologies, from the middle of the nineteenth century to the late twentieth century in the context of the Tajo-Segura Rivers water diversion and irrigation project. The progressive improvement of the water extraction process was very important for the survival of agriculture in Campo of Cartagena. This work is organized with the intention to link incorporation of power sources to several extraction technologies. The advances in new water extraction technologies were determined according to the power and the efficiency of energy resources that were available: animal-power, wind, carbon, poor gas, heavy oil, gas-oil, gasoline and electricity. The farmers’ investments in these machines provided basic improvements in the region’s agriculture production. The significance of these investments is all the more important given that during this period the shortage of capital could have blocked the modernization of the sector.
