Abstract

Campo de Cartagena is a large and complex hydro-geological unit located in the southeast of Murcia region, where there are no constant courses of surface waters. Watercourses gather water during rain periods, even though they are scarce, they tend to be intense. This paper tries to approach two main kinds of watercourses pollution that drain the south basin of Mar Menor Lagoon: On the one hand there are Sierra Minera of La Union watercourses that unload mining steriles on the lagoon, and on the other hand watercourses that come from Campo de Cartagena (focusing on Albujón watercouse) with their surplus of irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides, make the entrance of nitrogen compounds to Mar Menor.
