Abstract

The young and learned intellectuals of Murcia city –in most cases, scholars who taught at University– were heavily infl uenced by the Romantic literature that focused on local customs and manners by the middle of the 19th Century. The contry life in the Murcia region was highly valued, even idealised, in the work of these bourgeois scholars who actually transformed it. This idealisation is the basis for the subsequent perception of the Murcian country folklore, which is essentially urban. The infl uence of their work is still noticeable today, both in rural and urban areas.
