Abstract

This article presents a survey conducted in 1980 about the remains of a tradition called «Arbol de Mayo» or «El Mayo» in the region of La Rioja. There is a remarkable difference between the tradition of the western area or Rioja Alta and the eastern area or Rioja Baja. The «Arbol de Mayo» (May tree) has been placed every year everywhere in the Rioja Alta until the second third of the 20th century, whereas in the Rioja Baja it has been substituted by analogous traditions used for the popular celebration of the «Pascua Florida».
