Verbs of failure and feigning: their role in the identification of grammatical meaning
Abstract
The study of meaning encoded in lexical items poses the problem of determining which aspects of meaning are active structural components in syntax and which ones represent encyclopedic information not conveyed through grammatical units. This article examines the properties of two under-researched classes of verbs, namely, verbs of feigning (such as fintar) and verbs of failure (e.g. marrar) from the perspective of the distinction between grammatical meaning and encyclopedic knowledge. The study compares different ways of establishing this distinction and their implications for the semantic analysis of the said verbs.Downloads
