SOBRE LA SILEPSIS: UN ANÁLISIS LÉXICO-SEMÁNTICO DE LA DISCORDANCIA INDUCIDA POR MITAD
Abstract
The aim of this article is to provide a lexically oriented explanation for the well-known phenomenon of the semantically motivated agreement between a partitive nominal phrase headed by mitad and a plural verb form (agreement ad sensum) in Spanish (i.e., la mitad de los plátanos /se pusieron marrones/se puso marrón) My hypthesis takes into account the lexical content of the words in the partitive NP (the partitive noun mitad and the NP los plátanos, that denotes the whole entity quantified by mitad). Specifically, I propose, in terms of Pustejovsky (1995, 2000), that it is the appropiate co-composition between the information codified in the Qualia Structure of both words (apart from the crucial presence of a predicative element such as marrones) that licenses the plural or singular agreement, with their subsequent different interpretations.Downloads
