Praise of the native language and metalinguistic missionary grammars approach: the example of Domingo de Santo Tomás
Abstract
When comparing the birth and development of missionary linguistics with the slow process of the grammatization of the NeoLatin languages in Europe, we observed that the assessment of native languages (the praise of men though the praise of their language) in this missionary linguistics context immediately leads to the lexicographic and grammatization tasks much faster than in the case of Castilian and, in general, of the Neo-Latin languages in Europe. This article aims to confirm this assertion through Domingo de Santo Tomás’ thought, author of the first Quechua language grammar. The praise of the native language by the grammarian also leaves its mark on the grammatization procedures, which are conditioned by the relationships established between the target language, the metalanguage and the reference languages.
