Of Tailors and Models: Between Postcolonialism and Transnationalism in Spanish Experimental Documentary.
Abstract
This article focuses on the production of experimental cinema in Spain. First of all, it puts forward the concept of ‘experimental documentary’ in order to account for the volatility and heterogeneity of the field of research. On top of that, it questions the national perspective used by many scholars to study Spanish cinema, offering a transnational approach to Spanish experimental filmmaking as an alternative. Finally, and through a close analysis of Mohamed, el sastre y otras historias/Mohamed, the tailor, and other stories (Oscar Pérez, 2009) and El modelo/The model (Germán Celso, 2012), the article addresses the processes of deterritorialization and reterritorialization in which transnational experimental documentary takes place. At the same time, it highlights the anti- naturalist and grotesque strategies of these films, which make contact with the daily practices of marginal citizens and show the dissent and instability of transnational society.Downloads
