Abstract

This paper begins with the etymology of the word tiger, its relationship with the river Tigris, and the testimonies which associate both of them with quickness. After that, it includes citations of Greek and Latin authors concerning the origin of these animals and their characteristics. Pomponius Mela’s text (3.43) offers their main attributes: speed, ferocity and motherliness. References of each of them are offered, taken from prose and poetry writers. From Verg. Aen. 4. 367 on, the Hyrcanian tigress will designate the paradigm of a merciless man or woman.
