Abstract

This article aims to give a definition, according to the ancient Greek reflections, of a literary form described as minor by traditional criticism: Cento. Modern scholars only seem to appreciate it as a mere source for philological erudition, but Greek intellectuals theorized deeply on the literary aesthetics behind it. That interest is not so strange, if we realize that cento was in force without breaks in the course of many centuries, from Archaic Literature to the Byzantine Age. Throughout all Greek Literature, poets, grammarians and scholars offered a vast range of useful reflections on this genre, which are worth being taken in consideration by modern philology.
