Abstract

In this paper a new analysis of the structure of the Mulierum virtutes is proposed. At first we revisite the main topics of its prologue: dedication, date of composition, context, purpose, methodology, and selection of its content. We go on by studying some relevant features of the work as a whole, such as the different narrative techniques of its tales and the vocabulary describing arete. Starting from an implied catalogue of “virtues” we proceed to divide the twenty seven tales of the treatise according to three basic types which exemplify andreia, phronesis (sophrosyne is included here), and dikaiosyne, respectively. These types are interrelated. We focus on the analysis and commentary of them.
