Abstract

The author claims for the use of textual analysis for a comprehensive understanding of former depictions of the soul. He offers as an example a subtle analysis of the meanings of the terms psyché and soma, as used in a group of Homeric excerpts, and discusses the specific value of psyche in another set of excerpts from the Ilíada and The Odyssey, establishing the differences between this and other terms such as nóos (noûs), thymós, phrénes, prapídes, etc.
