Can the labour market lead to paid sex?
Abstract
It compares and analyses the female labour market with the paid sex market, looking for relationships between the two. The experiences of the labour market and sex work were collected from a sample of 226 sex workers surveyed online. The results reflect, on the one hand, the experiences of precariousness in jobs prior to sex work. On the other hand, they point out the advantages and disadvantages of sex work for sex workers, making rational choices in search of the greatest possible benefit. Thus, flexible hours, high economic benefits, compatibility with family life and studies, and the management of the services provided are a positive reinforcement compared to previous jobs. The major disadvantage raised was the stigma attached to sex work, which generated situations of humiliation, discrimination and sometimes violence. Finally, sex work legislation can facilitate or hinder the conditions for the development of the paid sex market, just as in the labour market.
