Résumé

The flower genre in the form of garlands was especially popular in religious themes in 17th century painting in much of Europe and particularly in Spain. Based on Italian and Flemish examples these compositions, which using the finest forms of plant life culminated, enriched and conveyed the meaning of the sacred themes they enclosed, were first produced by artists from the most important centres of Spanish painting. By the middle of the century they had spread to other art centres in mainland Spain, and amongst them Murcia, where this type of composition became notorious in the work of Mateo and Francisco Gilarte, and one canvas in particular, «Virgin of the Rosary with floral border», which was to inspire various reproductions.
