María al pie de la Cruz: doctrina, liturgia, afectividad e imagen en el relicario de la Vera Cruz del Vaticano

Resumen

El presente trabajo se centra en analizar la configuración de la compassio mariana en el arte bizantino, tomando como pieza central el relicario de la Vera Cruz de los Museos Vaticanos (ca. 930). Se examina cómo, tras la Querella Iconoclasta, la defensa iconódula de la Encarnación impulsó una nueva sensibilidad emocional que situó a María en un papel activo dentro de la representación del sufrimiento de Cristo. A través del estudio de la homilética posticonoclasta y, especialmente, de los stavrotheotokia, se muestra cómo la literatura litúrgica desarrolló un lenguaje afectivo que otorgó a la Virgen una presencia compasiva y teológicamente significativa en la Pasión. El relicario vaticano constituye un testimonio temprano de esta estética: la postura extraordinaria de María, inclinada hacia los pies de Cristo, traduce visualmente el pathos formulado en dichos himnos y refleja la creciente humanización de la Madre de Dios. Por lo tanto, esta investigación propone que esta obra debe entenderse como un dispositivo teológico-visual donde convergen reliquia, iconografía y liturgia, revelando su papel en la gestación de las futuras imágenes del lamento mariano que marcarán la tradición bizantina.
