A Contribution to the Latin Inscriptions Carved beneath the Sculptures of the Sibyls in Murcia Cathedral

Abstract

In the Junterón Chapel of the Cathedral of Murcia (the fourth chapel along the Epistle nave), there are fourteen sculptures—twelve sibyls, Saint John, and Isaiah— accompanied by inscriptions that are now difficult to read. One of them is so deteriorated that scholars who have studied this chapel, with great mastery, have been unable to reconstruct it. However, my research identifies the text that originally appeared in that location and, at the same time, proposes exchanging the names of two of the sibyls in order to correct them. Following my study, it is possible to determine with certainty the source of the inscriptions, which also served as a guide for the sculptures.
