Educatio Siglo XXI recommends that published articles use inclusive and non-sexist language that promotes gender equality in science, as promoted by the agenda of the European Research Area (ERA: period 2022-2024, with action no. 5: ‘Promote gender equality and foster inclusion’).
In our journal we understand that not all texts are equally viable for adapting certain linguistic formulas to the requirements of egalitarian language. We are also aware that the promotion of equality goes far beyond purely morphological aspects. However, we assume, as indicated in the Guide for a non-sexist language of the language (UAM, 2022), that language has sufficient resources and mechanisms to express what we want to say, so that ‘whoever produces the message can choose between some forms or others to express themselves in an inclusive and non-sexist way, so that language is an instrument for change’ (p. 9).
Likewise, Educatio Siglo XXI subscribes to the recommendations approved by the CRUE Gender Equality Policies Plenary Session of 19 July 2024. In this regard, it understands that inclusive language is a way of expressing oneself orally and in writing that seeks to give equal value to all people. This is achieved by avoiding discrimination and the reproduction of gender stereotypes.
For all these reasons, we at our journal consider that the willingness to write the text of articles in accordance with these recommendations represents a great step forward for society. Scientific communication cannot remain on the margins of the changes occurring in the society that sustains it.
