Impact of teacher training on teacher’s views about the importance of ICT in music teaching
Abstract
Music teachers in Spain can get access to a position in secondary school through several routes. This means that their approaches to music teaching may differ depending on their initial education.
Given the increasing presence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in both society and education, teachers need proper training in order to effectively respond to this new challenge in education. This paper aims to understand ICT training of music teachers and the impact it has on the factors allowing the implementation of ITC in class.
We designed a questionnaire which was completed by 53 music teachers in secondary schools all over Andalusia. Data analysis showed that teacher ICT train ing has an impact on the shaping of their views, approaches and emotional reactions to using ICT in the classroom.
Therefore, it is essential to improve and extend teacher ICT training so that they can get closer to a social reality they already belong to. This would be most beneficial in the case of music teachers, given that, according to many studies (Aróstegui, 2005; Delalande, 2004; Savege, 2007; Crawford, 2009; Ward, 2009), this subject has specific educational technological resources which would make music learning much more attractive and motivating.
