Abstract

This editorial is about the preparation of taekwondo athletes for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, focusing on how science, especially Observational Methodology, can help improve their performance. He begins by reflecting on what drives athletes to success and how he developed a system to measure technical and tactical parameters. Initially using an Excel sheet, they then progressed to more sophisticated systems.

The evolution of taekwondo in the Olympic Games is discussed, from the rhythm of sparring to changes in the electronic scoring system. The importance of Observational Methodology and detailed analysis of tactical actions is highlighted. Collaboration with colleagues and the development of tools such as the MenPas platform (www.menpas.com) and Hoisan software are mentioned.

Polar coordinate analysis is explored to understand patterns of athlete behavior, as well as sequential delay analysis to examine actions before and after the achievement of a point. The need to validate observation tools to ensure the reliability of the results is highlighted.

Finally, Markov chain analysis is mentioned to understand the relationships between tactical actions during competition. Sequences of actions with higher probability of success are described and the importance of using this knowledge to improve athletes' strategy and tactics is emphasized.

In summary, a scientific approach is presented to improve the performance of taekwondo athletes, using advanced analysis tools to understand and optimize their performance in competition.
