Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of habitual physical activity of in-school adolescents, taking into consideration various motives influencing their decision to play sports and exercise, which include enjoyment, competition, health, body image, friends and social recognition. A carefully-selected sample of 888 adolescents, aged between 14 and 17, from secondary education schools in Murcia (Spain) was used in the investigation. Our findings show that male adolescents value enjoyment, competition, health and social recognition, while females are less motivated by competition and favour the other three main motives to do physical activities. According to our results, male adolescents are more aware of the positive effects of sports and physical activity on their health. Female adolescents tend to ‘womanly’ fitness exercises and diet product consumption due to their concern about body beauty. The male adolescents’ levels of habitual physical activity rise, because they think that they can improve their health by exercising and playing sports.
