Abstract

Due to the lack of antecedents and research studies of the phenomenon of flow in Hispanic and Latin- American athletes, an exploratory study was completed integrating quantitative
and qualitative methods. A sample of 10 elite swimmers was individually interviewed, assessing motivation, goal orientation, and perceived ability; after the narration of their best performance experience, flow, anxiety and emotional states corresponding to that situations were assessed. Also, were obtained the narrations of their worst performance experience and the assessment of the corresponding same psychological states. Results reveal that best performance experiences presented higher levels of flow and positive tone emotions, along with lower levels of anxiety. Differences in all variables were statically significative. Narrations of best performance experiences contain more references about experiencing flow
dimensions.
