PERCEPTION OF UNDER-19 SOCCER PLAYERS AND INFLUENCE OF WORKING WITH PSYCHOLOGISTS IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGICAL VARIABLES AND INJURIES
Abstract
Research about the relationships between psychological factors and injuries indicate that there are certain psychological variables that may influence the vulnerability of an athlete to become injured. The soccer player's knowledge of these relationships may be important in the design of prevention programs, from a psychological perspective. The goals of the present study were to find out the degree of importance that soccer players place on psychological factors in injuries,to find out how this is affected by either working with a psychologist or not, and to establish whether there is a relationship between working with a psychologist or not and injury occurrence. One hundred ninety-nine soccer players from the Spanish Under-19 First Division were evaluated with two self-report questionnaires in order to evaluate the variables from this study. Results indicate that players perceive their
lifestyle as important in injury occurrence, that the players that work with a psychologist perceived concentration as more important in injury occurrence, and finally, that the players with a higher average number of very serious injuries work with psychologists, while those that have had fewer very serious injuries do not work with psychologists.
