Abstract

In this preliminary and exploratory study, we have studied the observational characteristics of the volleyball officials behaviours (both in the technical and disciplinarian ways), according with the game rules. In order to do that, we have adapted the Spanish version of the Coach Behavioral Assessment System (CBAS, Smith et al., 1977; Sousa et al., 2006) to the specific officials behaviors (respect to the coaches’ behaviours, mostly on the interpretation and application of the rules). We used the observation grid (the Volleyball Official Behavioral Observation System, SOCAV) for to record the official behavior during a match. At the same time, we recorded the players’ perceptions over the official behavior, and the official selfperception, and then we compared the results. Finally, we discuss the scope of the SOCAV, and we try to underline the next investigation steps.
