Abstract

The Self-Determination Theory (Deci and Ryan, 1985) constitutes an explicative model of human motivation that has been applied to several fields, among them, the physical activity and sport. The objective of this study is to check the foundations, investigations, measurement instruments and the practical application of this theory in the physical activity and sport. This theory determines in which extend people is or not freely involved in the development of the activities, bearing in mind a series of psychological mechanisms regulatory of the conduct and looking for a better orientation towards an auto determined motivation. The researches show that this self-determined motivation is related to intrinsic motivation, meanwhile the extrinsic motivation and its regulatory mechanisms favour a nor selfdetermined behaviour, even they are characterized by a lack of motivation. The practical implications in the physical activity and sport practice field suggest that is convenient to develop strategies to improve the intrinsic motivation and its ways to be regulated.
