Abstract

Climbing is a popular and growing sport, characterized by the risk of suffering injuries. Thus, is important to know the climber’s risk perception of the hazards that they expose themselves to while they climb. Our first objective was to create a questionnaire to assess risk perception in rock climbing. The sample was composed of 223 climbers from the communities of Madrid and Catalonia in Spain, whose age mean was 30 years. Results support a model of three factors, sustained with evidence of internal consistency and validity. The scores obtained indicate that the climber’s assessments about the risks taken while they climb are adequate. No differences were found in risk perception when compared by climbing modality and experience, but we did find a relation to climbing difficulty. Climbers who climb higher difficulty showed lower levels on risk perception. Our results suggest that risk perception could be one of the factors related to climbing performance. Results are discussed in view of further research.
