Abstract

An individualized systematic control of physical exercise and an accurate equipment for the physical activity become indicators of quality in the fitness industry. The aim of this study was to determine the fitness centers quality of the city of Murcia according to the exercise prescription, the services offered and the infrastructure and equipment facilities. Thirty-three sports facilities of the city of Murcia whose main service was a fitness room were assessed. The study variables were based on three dimensions: exercise prescription, services offered and infrastructure and equipment facilities. Data were collected through an Ad-hoc, which was validated by a group of expert judges. To determine the overall quality of the centers studied, an instrument designed for this study called Quality Scale of Exercise Healthy was used. The results showed that in 90.9% of the fitness centers was not controlled intensity. In addition, in 42,4% of fitness centers, exercise prescription was based solely on strength capacity and only in 12,5% had a person or group specifically charged with the physical exercise prescription. Several sports facilities (72,7%) had interdisciplinary work groups. Physiotherapists (24,2%) and nutritionists (12,1%) were more abundant in such professional groups. 100% of the analyzed fitness rooms did not reporter the minimum quality criteria in infrastructure and equipment for physical health is concerned
