RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOW'S TEAT NUMBER WITH THE LITTER SIZE AT BIRTH AND AT WEANIMG
Abstract
Taking into account the hypothesis that the quantity of teats can be a practical determining factor in the wo's prolificacy, the target of this work is to detemine the probable relationship between teats number and sow's productivity, evaluated through the litter size and the mortality at birth and at weaning. A total of 250 furrowing from 55 sows (Landrace X Hampshire) were analyzed, with an average 5 +- 3 farrows and 2 as a minimun. Éhere were 2.698 piglets born and the mortality was 9% at birth and 11% at wearning. The number of teats (T) were 14 +- 1 with a range of 11 to 16. Piglets only suckled 61% of the 3.592 available teats. Sows with 11 T had the smallest litter size (P<0.01) at birth and at weaning as long as the sows with 12 T had the larger average litter size (11,4 +- 2,30) and those with 15 T had (9,2 +- 2,0) at weaning. There were no significative correlations between teats number with the total of piglets born, with alive piglets, with the weaning, neither with the average mortality at birth and at weaning. According to these results it can be concluded that sow's productivity was not conditionedby mammary lines with 12 to 16 T taking into account the number of piglets at birth and at wearning, whereas the perfomance of sows with 11 T were negatively affected.Downloads
