Abstract

Aesthetic of the short text in the literary magazines of the Fin de siècle. The example of the Revue Blanche. As a result of a crisis in the Naturalist novel during the Fin de siècle, literary forms, and especially the ideas of totality and genre, are called into question. This allowsshort texts to appear in the literary scene at the same time as the so-called « petites revues littéraires » are spreading out. The « petites revues » are places for creation and experimentation and they also become the vehicle for condensation and discontinuity: the short text, from fragment to short story, lends itself well to one and singular reading. Through the example of the Revue Blanche, representative place for the literary change, our paper tries to analyze the different forms of this « aesthetic of brevity » and to show how short texts are especially significant for the representation system of the Fin de siècle.
