L´EXOTISME LITTÉRARIE: RELECTURE DU CONTE DE <I>VATHEK</I> DE WILLIAM BECKFORD
Abstract
When one reads a large of part of the critics that have been published so far about Vathek by William Beckford, the English writer- who nevertheless chose to present this short story in the French language- the contemporary reader cannot help but wonder that what he reads is something more than a fantastic narration. We are therefore tempted to read anew the literary history of the short story at the end of the 18th century which paved the way for the dark Romanticism of the 19th century. Is it possible to include this short story within a genre that includes the marvellous, the fantastic, the allegorical, the philosophical? Without refuting the genre classifications, I think it appropriate to question this work, translated by the Spanish poet Guillermo Carnero, in a different way. So, what is the creative process at work in Vathek by William Bedford?Downloads
