Abstract

Antagonists of the pathogenic Oomycete of pepper plants, Phytophthora Capsici, were isolated, selecting a bacterial isolate identified as Streptomyces Rochei and denominated Ziyani. During in vitro confrontations, the isolate produced inhibition zone by producing antibiotics. The radial growth of the pathogen was reduced by 48% at 48 hours and 81% at 96 hours. After 7 days the antagonist had completely invaded the Oomycete colony fragmenting it and sporulating throughout it. Scand electronic microscopy of the inhibition zone revealed the massive rolling up of the pathogen’s hyphae. This micro parasitism led to lysis and disintegration of the hyphae. The addition of the isolate to plants reduced root rot by up to 65%. The treated plants were a more intense green and no changes in dry weight or seedling length were detected compared with the control. The isolate can be cultivated in vermiculite + nutrient solution, which prolongs its life and facilitates its direct action in plants. The greatest decrease in root rot symptoms was attained with a concentration of 1,900 CFU/ml.
