Abstract

Tourism activity developed in Region of Valencia has mainly taken place, as well as other economic activities, within its coastal zone. The optimisation, in the long term, of the economy of a given space requires an agreed planning regarding use and consumption of resources. A long-term success of a coastal tourist destination is based on a quality level arranged within a planned spatial system, which integrates the whole economic and social system with its environment.      The paper outlines the measures taken by the Tourism Administration of the Valencian Regional Government which have an incidence in tourism activity developed in the coastal zone. Strategies such as the condition given by the status of «Municipio Turístico», entrepreneurial incentives, technical advice at the local level, differentiation of the product, quality and environment, education, and measures taken on the beaches are added to other tools such as the Tourism Spaces Plan, with the Bill 3/1998 of Tourism taking into account its definition and implementation. The paper concludes that these sectorial strategies are necessary and able to be incorporated within the frame of a planning process characterised by its spatial and multisectorial scope.
