COMUNICACIÓN Y EUFEMISMO: PATOLOGÍA DE LA PROPIEDAD LINGÜÍSTICA
Abstract
Confusion in languaje and communication destruction are mutually reinforcing phenomena; when they coincide in time, they operate in contrary directions. Luis Vives warned about the need to preserve languaje from confusion, since languaje and justice were the two forces that maintained social cohesion. However, in some professional contexts, the use of euphemisms has become generalized as a sociological phenomenon, an exponent of a tendency toward communication destruction. The communicative function of euphemisms consists in attenuating the connotations of the proper or direct term, which may offend good taste. Yet in proffessional contexts, euphemisms are not justified. Their general use obeys the desire to present an edulcrated version of reality and enters into clear contradiction with the principle of sincerity.Downloads
