FOR THE HISTORY OF THE LEXICAL AMERICANISM IN THE DICTIONARIES OF THE SPANISH
Abstract
The history of Americanisms in general dictionaries represents an important chapter of Spanish lexicography, still pending to be shaped. With the present work we aim to contribute to the knowledge of the beginning of the thinking on metalexicographical thought on this issue, through Vicente Salvá’s research. He was one of the first scholars in assuming the problem in the theoretical level and putting it into the practical level in his work Nuevo Diccionario de la Lengua Castellana (New Dictionary of Castillian Language), 1846. Salvá was ahead of the Real Academia Española (Spanish Royal Academy) as he carried out the first systematic collection of Americanisms known in the history of Spanish, using a rigorous method which shows that he had a surprisingly modern conception of the diatopic varieties of Spanish.Downloads
