The transitive se construction with saber: Evidence from Argentine Spanish
Abstract
In this paper we address a corpus of Argentine Spanish data taken from CORPES XXI that exhibits the combination of the aspectual clitic se with the verb saber as in Juan se sabe la lección. Starting with a general characterization of the constructions with this clitic, we take up Armstrong’s (2013) distinction between agentive constructions with reflexive clitic and transitive constructions with reflexive clitic and apply his predictions to the corpus. We note that, while sentences with saberse are close to the transitive constructions, not all the tests apply, so that it is not possible to argue that these constructions operate uniformly.Downloads
