Abstract

The study of subjectless sentences in the history of English has traditionally focused on the so-called "impersonal" verbs and constructions, leaving aside quite systematically the discussion of the absence of the subject in coordinated structures. The confusion (terminological and sometimes conceptual) in dealing with both topics is remarkable, and quite often both phenomena are conflated in the literature. On the other hand, just one author, Allen (1986, 1995) can be said to have addressed the topic of coordinate subject deletion from a truly linguistic (and not merely taxonomic) perspective. In this work we aim at analysing Allen´s work as well as critically reviewing some of the earlier accounts of subjectlessness in OE (especially in what they pertain to subject deletion), trying to presente a clear and coherent picture of the work on coordinate subject deletion in OE to the present day.
