Abstract

In this paper I investigate what I call person verbal deixis (PVD), usually known as cross-reference or person agreement in the linguistic literature. I survey the main types of PVD observed in many languages of the world. It is shown that in different genetically and geographically unrelated languages the verb is provided with deictic morphemes or clitics convcyving the main participants in the denoted event and that these verbal forms can function as complete sentences. In this paper some of the many morphosyntactic aspects of PVD are analyzed. It its shown that up to four participants can be included in one single verbal form. Some cross-linguistic generalizations are made concerning the grammatical factors affecting PVD: person, number, definiteness and semantic verbal type. It is also shown that these factors affect the order in which two or more verbal deictic morphemes appear in different languages. The cooccurrence restrictions between two or more verbal deictic morphemes or clitics denoting the participants are also accounted for in the paper.
