Article + tonic possessive in the region of Sierra de Francia (south of Salamanca) and su- rrounding areas. The alleged hurdano islet
Abstract
The lexical expression of possession in medieval Castilian romance has long been marked by the coexistence of the structure article + possessive, expressing semantic values, and the structure possessive without article, not expressing any affect. The structure article + possessive started gradually disappearing starting in the 15th century and has now totally disappeared from the written Castilian usage; however, this structure (with usually a possessive tonic) is still quite often used in the vernacular language of some rural districts, such as the Sierra de Francia (south of Salamanca). This article aims to describe, from two different corpora, the use and geographical reach of the medieval sequence and its variant tonic possessive + noun in the south of Salamanca and in northern Cáceres.
