DRAWING WITH THREAD: GRAPHIC AND SPATIAL EXPANSION IN INSTALLATION ART
Abstract
This article explores the role of thread as a three-dimensional line within contemporary installation art, through a comparative analysis of the works of Annette Messager and Chiharu Shiota. Beyond its traditional association with craft, textiles, and domesticity, both artists have redefined thread within contemporary art, exploring its capacity to articulate critical discourses, generate narratives, and structure space. According to Rosalind Krauss’ theories on the expanded field, this study explores how thread shifts from being a material relegated to the margins of art to becoming a tool for subverting gender conventions, challenging the limits of the picture plane, and establishing connections between the artwork, the viewer, and the space. This study aims to analyze how thread functions as a three-dimensional line, capable of challenging the hierarchies of visual language, demonstrating its potential as an installation resource. Thread is configured as a graphic element, blurring the boundaries between drawing, installation, and performance, opening new possibilities within contemporary art.
