Abstract

Starting from an exploration of Iria Candela’s book Sombras de Ciudad, this article examines contextual art in relation to the periphery and how it intertwines with gentrification and urban art. It begins by analyzing how the concept of the periphery has evolved in the Spanish context, highlighting the role of urban art as a critical and transformative tool capable of re-signifying the perception of the periphery and challenging dominant narratives. The case study presented in the city of Valencia exemplifies these dynamics, focusing on city-context artists such as Luce, Anaïs Florin, and Escif, who offer contextual proposals that connect with their environment and provide an aesthetic response to the social realities surrounding them.
