The proliferation of an image. From political dissidence to Aliexpress in five steps
Abstract
The image of the performance of the Russian group Pussy Riot in a Moscow church in 2012 was broadcast worldwide after the arrest of its protagonists. In the international protest movement that was generated, the balaclava was assumed as an icon. This garment reappears in other contexts: a Madonna concert, a scene from the movie Spring Breakers. In this article we discuss a series of images connected by this common element that functions as a symbol of dissidence and social struggle and that, through its different uses and appropriations, has been changing its meaning.
How are images of resistance constructed? How are they put into circulation? What possibilities of appropriation and replicability do they host? What action capacity do they have? Through this brief tour we propose to look at some aspects that could be useful to us when addressing these issues.
